4K video editing: recommended PC specifications
Editing 4K videos requires more computer resources than working with Full HD. If your PC is not powerful enough, you may experience slow preview playback, freezing, or longer export times.
This article explains which PC specifications we recommend for editing 4K videos in Movavi Video Editor and Movavi Video Suite on Windows, and how to improve performance.
Recommended PC specifications
For comfortable 4K video editing, we recommend:
  • Processor: at least 4 cores
  • RAM: 16 GB or more
  • Graphics card: a dedicated GPU with at least 4 GB of video memory, such as NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1650, RTX 2060, or RTX 3060
  • Storage: an internal SSD for your videos and project files

These are recommended specifications, not minimum system requirements. Performance also depends on video format, frame rate, effects, and project complexity.

How to improve editing performance
If editing 4K videos is slow, try these steps:

  1. Update your graphics drivers. Download the latest drivers from your graphics card manufacturer's website.
  2. Connect your laptop to a power source. Some laptops reduce performance when running on battery.
  3. Use an internal SSD. Copy your videos to an SSD before importing them into the program.
  4. Disconnect additional monitors. If you're using multiple displays, try disconnecting them temporarily.
  5. Check your graphics card settings. If your PC has both integrated and dedicated graphics, make sure the program uses the appropriate GPU. See Program lagging on Windows (integrated vs dedicated GPU).
Optimize HD clips
Movavi Video Editor includes a feature called Optimize HD clips, which creates lighter copies of your videos for smoother editing.

To enable it:
  1. Open Movavi Video Editor
  2. Go to Settings → Preferences → Acceleration
  3. Enable Optimize HD clips
If preview playback becomes slower or the image looks incorrect, try disabling this option.

For more solutions, see Preview playback is slow.
If your 4K video doesn't open
Some 4K videos use the H.265 (HEVC) codec, which may require additional support on Windows.
If your video doesn't import, shows a black screen, or plays only audio:
  1. Check Video doesn't open or import correctly (HEVC / H.265) – Windows.
  2. If the issue persists, try converting your video to MP4 (H.264) and importing it again.
