EXPORTED VIDEO QUALITY IS LOWER THAN ORIGINAL
If the exported video looks lower quality than expected, the export settings may not match the quality of the original video.
This article applies only to cases where the final exported file looks blurry or loses detail. It does not apply if only the preview quality looks lower.
What’s happening
The preview area in the editor does not show the final output quality. It uses a reduced resolution to ensure smooth playback during editing.
In most cases, the exported video has better quality than the preview.
But if the exported video itself looks lower quality than expected, here are a few things you can check.

Start here
First, check whether the issue affects:
  • the exported video file, not just the preview, and
  • overall quality (blur, loss of detail), not visual glitches
If you see green or black squares, flickering, or corrupted frames, this is a different issue. See: OpenGL-related issues.
Common reasons and how to fix them
Case 1: The original video has a higher resolution than the project
If your source video resolution is higher than the project or export settings, the output video may look blurry.

What to check

  1. Right-click the clip on the timeline
  2. Select File Information
  3. Note the resolution and bitrate

Case 2: Project resolution does not match the source video
Set the project resolution to match your source files.
  1. Click the [16:9] button next to the preview area
  2. Select the resolution that matches the original video

This ensures that the video is not downscaled during editing.

Case 3: Export settings reduce quality
When exporting, make sure the resolution and bitrate are matching the original video.
  1. Open the Export settings
  2. Confirm that the resolution matches the project resolution
  3. Set the bitrate close to the original video’s bitrate

📌Important: Lower bitrate values can result in noticeable quality loss.

Case 4: The original file has lower resolution than the export
If the original video resolution is lower than the export resolution (for example, exporting to 1080p from a lower-resolution source), the video may look soft or blurry.

What to do
  1. Open your project and locate your video files
  2. Right click on the video and check the resolution of this file
  3. If the file resolution is below 1920×1080, consider lowering the export resolution in Export → Advanced
  4. If this is the case, we recommend checking your camera settings and increasing the recording resolution.
When to contact Movavi Customer Service
Contact Movavi Customer Service if the exported video still looks lower quality after completing all steps above.

Include:
  • the exported video quality is still lower than the original
  • project and export settings match the source video
  • the issue is visible in the final exported file
  • the original video file
  • the exported video file

Providing this information helps us resolve the issue faster.
