If a project does not open, opens with errors, or behaves unexpectedly, this is usually related to version mismatch, missing files, or an incomplete project save.
You can follow the steps below to identify and resolve the issue.
Before you start
First, check whether the project opens in the same program version it was created in.
Projects created in a newer version of the program cannot be opened in an earlier version.
You can check the program version in the About section of the application.
If the versions match and the issue persists, continue below.
Common reasons and solutions
Case 1: The project was created in a newer version
If the project was created in a newer version of the program, it won’t open in an older version.
If this happens, try updating the program to the latest version using Help -> Check for updates.
Case 2: The project was not saved correctly due to a crash
If the program crashed or stopped responding while you were working on the project, the project file may be incomplete. What you can do:
Check whether there are temporary or autosave files available on your system. They are generally located next to your original file.
Look for files with names related to your project in the default project folders used by the program.
If you can’t find your project files, try searching your entire device for files in the .mepj format. Then open the project file with the closest last modified date.
Note Temporary and autosave files are created for internal use. They are generally not containing the latest revision of your file.
Case 3: Files used in the project are unavailable
The issue may occur if files used in the project were:
added from a removable drive
added from cloud storage
moved, deleted, or became inaccessible during editing
What you can do:
Make sure all media files used in the project are stored locally on your computer
If the files were added from an external drive or cloud storage, move them to your computer’s hard drive
Try opening the project again
If you see the “Some files cannot be found” message, click Browse and choose the folder containing the moved files.
