EXPORT ERROR: "AN UNKNOWN ERROR OCCURRED"
This article covers the most common causes of the issue and the steps you can try before contacting Customer Service.
Common symptoms
You may notice one or more of the following:
  • export stops with “An unknown error occurred”
  • the project cannot be saved or exported
  • export fails at a specific percentage
  • the same project which worked before no longer exports.
Why this happens
This error usually occurs when:
  • hardware acceleration fails during encoding
  • graphics drivers are outdated or you are using an unstable version
  • there is not enough free disk space
  • required codecs were not activated
  • the project requires more system resources than available.
Start here (quick fix)
Step 1: Disable hardware acceleration
  1. Open the program settings
  2. Go to Preferences → Acceleration
  3. Disable all enabled acceleration options
  4. Restart the program
  5. Try exporting the project again

If export succeeds, the issue is likely related to the GPU encoding.

Step 2: Check graphics drivers
Outdated or unstable drivers may cause the encoder to stop.

If the issue started after a recent driver update, try exporting the video with hardware acceleration disabled.

Step 3: Check free disk space
Make sure the drive you're exporting to has enough free space.

If possible:
  • try changing the output location to another drive if available
  • choose a different output folder (for example, make a folder in root of C:/ drive and save the video here)

Step 4: Check GPU selection (if applicable)
If your system has two graphics cards (integrated + dedicated):
  • try exporting with the integrated GPU
  • or disable acceleration and export using CPU

Please note that performance may sometimes be unstable due to driver issues or the way your system allows the program to use your graphics.

Step 5: Verify source files
All files used in the project must still be available.

Check that:
  • source files were not moved or deleted
  • external or network drives are connected
  • removable storage used for the project is still accessible

If a source file is missing, export will fail.

Step 6: Verify encoder configuration
If export fails for a specific format:
  • try exporting to a different format
  • restarting the program and repeating export

This often resolves the issue.

Step 7: Reduce resources required for export
If the project is large or complex:
  • try exporting using Draft / low quality
  • test exporting only a short fragment
  • export the project in parts
  • lower the resolution and bitrate in Advanced settings in the Export window

This helps identify resource-related limitations.
When to contact Movavi Customer Service
Contact Movavi Customer Service if:
  • export fails after all steps above
  • the error appears with different projects

Include:
  • log files from the program
  • whether hardware acceleration was enabled or disabled
  • whether the issue occurs with different projects
  • the export format you were using

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to collect log files.
